Analytical Essay (Succeeding When You’re Supposed to Fail and Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave)

Write an essay that answers the following question:

What caused Frederick Douglass to succeed in spite of obstacles that made others fail?

·          Analyze how Douglass has done this, identifying the principles that allowed him to succeed. Use summary and explanation to show your grasp of the principles in Brafman’s book. Don’t assume that the reader knows what the principles are!

·         Apply Brafman’s ideas to your analysis of Douglass’s behavior.  Provide specific examples from the Narrative and your research that illustrate why and how Douglass acted the way he did.  Be sure to explain how the examples illustrate the principles instead of letting the reader do the work.

·         Your essay must include in-text citations and a list of works cited in MLA style.

Required sources:

·         Brafman, Succeeding When You’re Supposed to Fail

·         Douglass, Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave (pdf file)

·         Two articles about Frederick Douglass (Wikipedia is not an acceptable source)
