NATR 300 - Professor Papouchis (Spring 2013): Select a Topic

Use this guide as a follow-up to your library orientation. Need ideas for your individual and group projects? Check here!

Welcome

Hello! Please use the tabs above to explore the LibGuide. This page gives suggestions on topics appropriate to your assignments. Other pages help you find sources.

Test a Topic Idea

Choosing a research topic isn't always easy. Your topic needs to be narrow and focused enough to be interesting, and broad enough for you to find a manageable amount of information.

1) To test a topic, state your topic idea as a question. For example, if you want to find out about effects of offshore oil drilling, you might ask, "What effect does offshore oil drilling have on the marine life?"

2) Second, identify the main concepts or keywords in your question, in this case, oil, offshore drilling, and marine life.

3) Then, you are ready to test the main concepts or keywords in your topic by looking them up and pursuing background information first, perhaps in a reference book (see Find Books tab), or in a general database. Librarians hope you will explore and use a variety of information sources. Ask for help at any time.
