ENGWR 301 - Professor Schneider (Spring 2015): Finding Sources

Suggested resources for your research.

Finding Books Tutorial

Use the Library Catalog to search for books and videos located in the Los Rios libraries.

Simple searches should work well for this assignment. Try searches like:

author or filmmaker's name

For example: Bukowski

author or filmmaker's name and the word crticism

For example: Plath criticism

author or filmmaker's name and title of work

For example: Alice Walker Color Purple

Reference Books: Gale Literary/Literature Criticism Series

If you're researching a piece of literature about which not a ton has been written, you may need to use the literature books in the reference collecton. Using these can be a little time consuming, but they are great because they have good stuff on otherwise tough to research topics.

Start by finding which books discuss your work using the Gale Literary Index.

Suggested Databases

Use the library's Research Databases to find articles in newspapers, magazines, and scholarly journals.

Simple searches will work, but you can also try adding additional keywords.

For example: Marquez Labyrinth Magical Realism

Finding Books & Articles

This video will walk you through the process of finding books and articles using OneSearch. You'll find OneSearch on the Library's databases page.
