Research Help for Students

Even with a closed campus, you still have access to much of the library's collection and expert researchers (your faculty librarians)! Try one of these services:

24/7 Research Help Chat

Librarians are available 24/7 via chat reference.  ARC librarians staff the chat service during regular business hours, and non-local librarians are available to answer questions during all other times of day (or night).  You will see the Chat with A Librarian icon from OneSearch, on our Research Guides homepage, and on the Library’s homepage.

Submit your question to get help from a librarian such as for factual questions or suggest research strategies. We try to respond within 24 hours (Monday through Friday).

You can also leave a message at the Library’s Research Help Desk line at (916) 484-8458.  Messages will be forward to an ARC Librarian who will be available to return your call within 24 business hours, Monday - Friday.

Phone Research Appointments

You can speak one-on-one with a librarian through a phone appointment. Get help narrowing topics, developing research questions, finding appropriate sources, citations, and more.

Canvas Research Tutorials

ARC Library Research Tutorials in Canvas

Self enroll through Canvas.

After logging in to Canvas, click on Enroll in Course. Each of the 6 self-paced online modules takes about 15-30 minutes to complete. You can do just a few, or all the modules. You can also earn a certificate of completion for each module. Topics include:
