Your Assignment

Assignment:

You have been studying nutrition and the impact on the body. In this assignment you will research a vitamin or mineral. You will prepare a brief and accurate presentation with illustrations using technology (PowerPoint or Google Slides.) for fellow classmates to learn about the health benefits of that particular vitamin or mineral. You will prepare and submit/upload a presentation (9-10 minutes in length) on a topic from the vitamin and mineral sections of the textbook. Each member must participate. To prepare for your presentation, you will want read about your topic; both from your text and other library sources.

Step 1: You can either work alone or in a group. Come up with a team name. Type in your team name plus list everyone included in the team (first and last) on the Google Sheet Link provided on Canvas called Sp20 Vitamin/Mineral Group(s).

Step 2: Generate a commitment code and work schedule/calendar (10 points) – group/individual will prepare presentation commitment code and work schedule/calendar, identify preferred methods of communication (text and email), identify dates/times for communication, and identify method of file sharing, determine if using PowerPoint or Google Slides. Identify individual roles. For example, identify your technical guru, identify your motivator (someone to keep the group on task), identify everyone’s role/responsibility. Submit electronic commitment code and work schedule/calendar into the Canvas dropbox. Everyone must submit/upload the same document.

Step 3: Research your topic - Your presentation/work will be graded in the following three areas:

Area 1 - Content (55 points) • You will be responsible for covering eight topics (A - G) to be covered during presentation.

A. Introduction of topic – 2.5 points a. History (if applicable)

B. Sources – 5 points a. Plant based foods – how much in 1 cup or 8 fluid ounces. i. Common top 5 foods ii. Is there a difference between cooked vs uncooked? b. Non-food sources

C. Recommendations – 5 points a. RDA for adults (or AI, if applicable) b. UL for adults i. What happens if we have too much of this nutrient? ii. How common?

D. Digestion/Absorption – 10 points a. Any known substances that block digestion and/or absorption.

E. Functions - 20 points a. What does it do? How does it do it? i. Focus on the top 2 main functions 1. Break-down of information. b. Does nutrient prevent onset of disease(s)?

F. Deficiencies – 10 points a. What are the signs/symptoms if humans don’t get enough? b. How common? c. Who would be at risk for not getting enough? d. Does nutrient increase risk of a certain disease(s)?

G. Interesting fact(s) (if applicable) – 2.5 points

Area 2 - Creativity (5 points)

• Use of PowerPoint or Google Slides.

• Provide a transcription your presentation (this will have to be in MS Word). • Presentation encourages audience participation.

• Appropriate complex material, clear language, use of original figures/images.

• Acknowledgement of resources.

• Overall presentation highly original, fun, smooth transitions, and clearly thought out plan.

Area 3 – Self/Group Evaluation (5 points).

• This will be a separate Google Doc Link posted on Canvas called Sp20 Self/Group Evaluation. Total = 65 Points (or 75*)

*10 points Extra credit: Using your transcription (Area 2) record a narration of your slide show using either PowerPoint or Google Slides. Use Screen-o-matic web-based screen recorder software (it’s free!). Watch these helpful Tutorial, Overview, Recording, Publish videos to help you earn extra credit. • You will have to submit/upload the video link and/or the embed code by the due date.
