BIO 420 - Professor Holmes (Spring 2022): Getting Started

What Should I Do on This Page?

For this assignment, you're required to incorporate scholarly articles into your research, but there are certain tips and tricks to reading scholarly articles that once you become familiar with them, you'll likely find the process for reading and finding them much easier, so take time to watch the How to Read a Scholarly Article video (it's pretty short), and play with the interactive The Anatomy of a Scholarly Article outlined in the box below.

Once you have an idea of how to navigate a scholarly article, complete the "Identify Keywords" exercise to practice developing a good research question and identify keywords that are based on that question to find relevant articles.

What Do I Need to Know About Scholarly Articles?

For this assignment, you'll need to use and cite scholarly articles, so use the information presented on this page to learn:

  • How to read a scholarly journal article
    • Scholarly articles are not read from start to finish like a novel, and this How to Read a Scholarly Article video outlines a strategy you can use to save yourself time and increase your comprehension of what you are reading.
  • What a scholarly article typically looks like
    • Scholarly articles typically include sections like an abstract, introduction, methods, conclusion or discussion, and knowing when and how to access the information in each section can also help increase your understanding of the material and save you time. The Anatomy of a Scholarly Article is an interactive resource you can use to learn more about the different sections.
  • Get an overview of the peer review process in 3 minutes
    • Peer reviewed articles (also known as scholarly articles) go through a specific process in order to be published in scholarly journals.  The Peer Review in 3 Minutes video explains what that process is and how peer reviewed articles can be used to support your research.
