Black History Month: I Am Black History: 2024

Celebrating and honoring living history: the experiences, stories, accomplishments, thoughts, and excellence of Black ARC Students.

I Am Black History

This Black History Month, Umoja Sakhu and the ARC Library are highlighting living history: the experiences, stories, accomplishments, thoughts, and excellence of Black ARC Students. Thank you for taking a moment to check out what these scholars have shared :)

Laketa Johnson

I am self-sufficient with leadership and self-determination. I am assertive, focused, and a free thinker. Every day, I become stronger, more daring, more confident, and (in a good way) stubborn. As a student peer mentor and tutor for Umoja and Rising scholars, I am here to help my fellow peers, offering advice on academic and personal matters. Providing encouragement and motivation, sharing insights about the college or educational environment, and also being a positive role model. I am a thinker and problem-solver who is also lively, brave, and free-spirited. I am adaptive, versatile, outgoing, quick-witted, courageous, and direct. I'm working on respecting my time so that I don't spend it on frivolous pursuits. I value dependability and usefulness, as well as independence. I take my responsibilities seriously and am determined to achieve my objectives. I enjoy being a part of groups that make a difference because I want to be well-prepared for the future. I can see the larger picture and I can be quite analytical. I frequently think outside the box, but I am a logical individual. Before making a decision, I carefully examine the situation. I am complicated but I am Laketa. Loving myself and understanding is a celebration of my unique place in the ongoing journey of the Black experience as living history.

I Am Black History…

Marie Rice

I am a child of GOD, unique in so many ways like bringing my family together like preparing a table to break bread and nourish each other. I am like water always finding the way to reach out to others to help things flow soothing the pain and the sufferings of others. I am an advocate for the homeless by collecting things that others no longer need for those still in need, helping them to make a way out and into a better life. I am energetically adaptable to who I am around and wherever I go. I am an honest person, true and real with everybody I come in contact with, I am an inspiring person, and a social caring person because people tell me that I really believe that within myself. I am kind, loving, and I bring laughter to people I don't even know, I am a forbearing woman in life, I am a person who likes to strive for greatness, I am not where I used to be I am not where I want to be, I am right where I am supposed to be. Amen.

I am the most lovely, compassionate person you will ever meet, with a heart of gold. There is always a smile on my face when you pass me. I prefer to be positive rather than constantly negative, and I always have hugs or compliments to offer to strangers or friends that pass by. My concern for others is constant, whether it's for friends, family, or students. I love working within my ARC community, I not only work closely with Umoja Sakhu/Black Student Success and Associated Student Body to help out my peers be successful with either their classes, issues they have among campus, or even just in their daily day base’s. Even when I’m not working I love to express my weirdness by wearing cute funky shirts with animals, or even carrying around my mushroom bag, I truly do love to express myself because I’m Black and I’m proud. Even though this is my last semester on campus, I plan to get involved with either my peers or the campus as much as I can before graduation.

"I AM"

I am a Daughter of the Most High God who is created to encourage, and also uplift others through their trials and tribulations. I am a spiritual advisor that loves to see others reach their potential to become healed in all negative areas of their lives. I'm very compassionate, loving, kind, down to earth, reliable, dependable, hard-working, precise, trustworthy, and also strong minded. I am a woman of noble character and  I enjoy seeing others strive for greatness especially when you can see the reflection of yourself within the people you are in front of. Unity and harmony is one of the many aspects of what God has created me to share in this negative world we all reside in. One thing I have learned is that helping others even through my rough patches has taught me to keep loving those that's not even willing to love themselves. This is why I will continue sharing genuine love. I will always remain positive despite the mist of the challenges that come my way and that come to seek for me. I am a beacon of light and I will continually share joy and peace for those who can not seem to have no place to go.

Terkeshia Braxton

Terkeshia smiling Phenomenal Woman By Maya Angelou
Pretty women wonder where my secret lies.
I'm not cute or built to suit a fashion model's size
But when I start to tell them,
They think I'm telling lies.
I say,
It's in the reach of my arms
The span of my hips,
The stride of my step,
The curl of my lips.
I'm a woman
Phenomenal woman,
That's me.
I walk into a room
Just as cool as you please,
And to a man,
The fellows stand or
Fall down on their knees.
Then they swarm around me,
A hive of honey bees.
I say,
It's the fire in my eyes,
And the flash of my teeth,
The swing in my waist,
And the joy in my feet.
I'm a woman
Phenomenal woman,
That's me.
Men themselves have wondered
What they see in me.
They try so much
But they can't touch
My inner mystery.
When I try to show them
They say they still can't see.
I say,
It's in the arch of my back,
The sun of my smile,
The ride of my breasts,
The grace of my style.
I'm a woman
Phenomenal woman,
That's me.
Now you understand
Just why my head's not bowed.
I don't shout or jump about
Or have to talk real loud.
When you see me passing
It ought to make you proud.
I say,
It's in the click of my heels,
The bend of my hair,
the palm of my hand,
The need of my care,
'Cause I'm a woman
Phenomenal woman,
That's me.
