Film Adaptations: Home

Books made into Film

What is this guide?

Poster for The Godfather filmCover of "The Godfather" bookThis guide is a resource of films that have been adapted from previously published works, such as, books, musicals, and plays.  Adaptations account for many films that are produced, as exemplified with the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay.  Quite often there will be many differences between the original work and the film.  The screenwriter may want to create a different story, or the medium of film allows filmmakers to do things that cannot be done in other works.  While consensus is usually that the book is better, there are always exceptions. Why not read a book and watch the film to form your own opinion on a particular film adaption?

As this is a compilation, a lot of good films were left off of this guide.  Please contact the library if you think there is a title worthy to be on this list.
