ENGWR 300 - Professor Corbin (Fall 2014): Research Databases

CQ Researcher

CQ Researcher contains background reports on current social and political issues. You won't find information about local issues, but you can read about the issue as a whole -- for example, you won't find an article about homelessness in Sacramento, but you WILL find articles about homelessness in general.

Tips:

  • Use CQ to get background info on the broader issue. You will not find local information in this database.

  • Don't get too specific with your search terms. For example, try "homelessness" instead of something like "mentally ill homeless veterans"

OneSearch

In OneSearch, you'll find newspaper, magazine, and academic journal articles on a wide variety of topics. You can also find both print books and e-books. You *might* be able to find a few articles about local issues, but more likely, you'll be using this database to gain a better understanding of the issue as a whole.

Tips:

  • Use 2-4 keywords

  • Think of the core concepts of your topic and use those as search terms

  • Use the results that you find to help you find alternative search terms.

  • Do a bunch of searches with different combinations of search terms -- you won't find everything you need in one try.

  • If you get stuck, ask a librarian for help.
