MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers

The MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers is the official handbook to MLA style.  Although there are many helpful guides to MLA style you may have to consult the handbook for some issues.  

The library has copies for checkout and in-house use.  There is also a large print edition available for checkout.  

What you need to know about citation

  • Citation allows people to see where you found your information and locate those sources for themselves.
  • Attention to detail is important; spacing, indentation, punctuation, italics and spelling are all important when you create your citations.
  • In your paper, you need to cite specific information, direct quotations and ideas you are borrowing from others. If you don't, you might be accused of plagiarizing.
  • Don't plagiarize.
  • You can use a citation generator or a citation from a database as a starting point, but they are often incorrect. Always check citations from these sources.
