Subject encyclopedias are a great starting point for your research, because they provide concise, unbiased background articles on a wide range of topics. They'll help you better understand the issues surrounding your topic.

Here are some examples of subject encyclopedias. They are great sources of background information on a wide variety of topics. You'll find most of them on the first floor of the library behind the Research Help Desk. Some are also available online. Ask a librarian for help finding a good subject encyclopedia on your topic.

How to Find Subject Encyclopedias

1. Browse. Use this chart to find the call number area for your topic. Then, go to the reference area and look for the reference books in that call number range. 

2. Search. Use Gale Virtual Reference Library to find online subject encyclopedias on your topic.

3. Ask a Librarian.
