The majority of classic novels have, at one time or another, been banned or contested. Ironically, some of these classic novels have also been awarded such honors as the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award. The Library of Congress's exhibit, "Books That Shaped America," includes many of these books. The American Library Association provides a list of 46 classics that have been banned and challenged, the reasons why, and the organizations that have banned the book. This list also provides reasons for the book being banned.
